A Clinical Study on Nasopharyngeal Cancer

Abstract
The nasopharynx is one of the more interesting sites of cancer to study in the head and neck region, and the incidence is different from geography and races, especially high in Chinese. Not only due to late appearing symptoms but also due to
anatomical
complexity of the nasopharynx and difficulties in treatment, radiation therapy seems to be the most useful treatment method.
According to several reports, it is known that the local control rate is high extraordinary. But five years survival rate is low to 35-57% owing to the high local recurrence and distant metastasis inspite of early radical radiation therapy.
Therefore,
some cancer institute had tried combined modality with induction chemotherapy.
We report the results of an analysis about 56 patients diagnosed as nasopharyngeal cancer and treated in Kosin medical college from January, 1984 to December, 1993.
The five years follow up data was analyzed.
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1) Overall survival rates without regarding to stage were 49.3%.
2) As to survival according to sex, male had 47% and female had 56.6% (p>0.05).
3) Survival rates for patients with squamous cell carcinoma, undifferentiated carcinoma, and malignant lymphoma were 32.1%, 64.6%, and 66.7% (p=0.03).
4) As to survival rate according to primary tumor, T1 was 57.1%, T2 55.6%, T3 39.5%, and T4 36.5% (p>0.05).
5) As to survival rate according to neck metastasis, the survival rates were 60% and 43.4% for patients with abscent node involvement and those with nodal disease respectively (p>0.05).
6) As to survival rate according to stage, stage ¥° and ¥± ware 100%, stage ¥² 44.4%, and stage ¥³ 43.6% (p>0.05).
7) As to survival rate according to treatment modality, the survival rate were 61.9%, and 26.1% for patients treated by radiation therapy and those treated by combination of induction chemotherapy and radiation therapy (p>0.05). (Korean J
